Pursuit operations are ongoing against the perpetrators of a roadside bombing in a village in Midsayap town in Cotabato where two soldiers and a student were wounded, radio reports said on Thursday, June 23.
The reports initially identified the injured in the explosion on Wednesday, June 22, as Private First Class Jestoni Bauzon, Sergeant Edwin Soria, and Miriam Akis. Bauzon and Soria are from the 62nd Reconnaissance Company of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division.
Superintendent Tom Tuzon of the Midsayap police was quoted as saying that the three blast victims were brought to a hospital in the town center.
The suspects are alleged members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) who, Tuzon said, set up an improvised explosive device (IED) along Barangay (village) Olandang from a howitzer cannon projectile that could be detonated remotely.
Investigation showed that Bauzon and Soria were riding in an Army vehicle and passing a narrow road near the campus of the Dabpil Sampulna High School when the IED-laden nails and iron fragments exploded.
Gunmen near the area then shot at the vehicle using assault rifles but Bauzon and Soria’s fellow soldiers returned fire and repelled the attackers.
