Former President Benigno Aquino, government officials and cause -oriented groups have gathered on Saturday, February 25 at the People Power Monument (PPM) in Quezon City to commemorate the 31st Edsa People Power anniversary.
Aquino was joined by former Senator Mar Roxas, Senators Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Bam Aquino, and Risa Hontiveros in this celebration.
Protest groups also arrived at the PPM, which include the #BlockMarcos movement, Coalition Against the Return of the Marcoses in Malacañang (CARMMA), and some Catholic nuns.
The #BlockMarcos was formed in opposition of the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB).
The 31st celebration of the People Power under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte was “peaceful and quiet”.
Duterte did not attend the 31st People Power ceremony which started on Feb. 24. He was represented by his executive secretary Salvador Medialdea.
“It’s time to move on from just celebrating the past, remembering the past and to move on into the whole aspect of nation building, to give it a more positive outlook and a more positive understanding,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
A separate protest in the form of prayer vigil was held at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta which was attended by supporters of Duterte. The group supported Duterte’s war against illegal drugs, poverty, and corruption.
Meanwhile, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) advised motorists who are about to take the Ortigas, Edsa route to take alternative routes due to slow-moving traffic.
The People Power Revolution or the Edsa Revolution was a series of protest which began in 1986 that was held during Feb. 22 to 25.
