The Aquino administration’s issuance of environmental compliance certificates (ECCs) for 19 coal-fired power plants betrays its claim it is for renewable energy, a Catholic Church official said.
Father Edwin Gariguez, Caritas Philippines executive secretary, said the government should not have given so many ECCs to potentially environmentally destructive facilities.
“In the first place, the government should not have issued so many ECCs and should have stopped allowing the construction of coal-fired power plants,” Gariguez said on Church-run Radyo Veritas.
He said the issuance of the ECCs amounted to mere lip service by the Aquino administration, which is stepping down from office at noon of Thursday, June 30.
Gariguez said he was looking forward to the assumption into office of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
