In a rare show of compassion for his nemesis, President Rodrigo Duterte expressed concern that Senator Leila De Lima maybe on the verge of a breakdown stemming from allegations of her involvement in the illegal drug trade.

“I would suggest that she take days off. And I am afraid that if she continues yakking there, she’ll have a nervous breakdown,” President Duterte said when asked to comment on de Lima’s outburst earlier on Wednesday, September 28.

“In all sincerity as a human being, I think she’s breaking down,” said Duterte at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) before leaving for Vietnam on an official visit.

De Lima dared the president to arrest her and put her in jail in a separate press conference.

The lady senator has been reeling from accusations on her drug connections inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) after she, as former head of the Senate justice committee, launched an inquiry into the spate of extrajudicial killings attributed to Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre presented several convicted criminals as witnesses against de Lima during an inquiry at the House of Representatives on the illegal drug activities inside the NBP.

De Lima was replaced as justice committee chairperson by Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon.
