In a talk that lasted 7 minutes and 20 seconds on Friday night, December 2, President Rodrigo Duterte and US President-elect Donald Trump had a “very engaging, animated conversation,” according to Christopher Go, special assistant to the President.
In a text message to reporters, Go said Duterte called Trump at 10:30 p.m. (Manila time) to congratulate the billionaire who won the Nov. 8 US elections against Hillary Clinton.
Duterte also invited Trump to attend the 2017 summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) which will be hosted by the Philippines. Trump reciprocated the gesture by inviting Duterte to visit Washington DC next year.
Relations between the Philippines and the United States somehow soured over Duterte’s expletives on outgoing US President Barrack Obama and former Ambassador to Manila Philip Goldberg.
