Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz has maintained her earlier prediction that Maxine Medina the country’s representative to the Miss Universe pageant won’t win the crown.
“She cannot nga be the winner. She can be first runner-up. I hope I’m proven wrong for the first time in my life. I want her to win. I want us to be so proud, but you know, that’s life,” said Diaz in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart” on January 27.
While the beauty queen turned actress believes the 26-year-old Medina is among the top contenders, she would only be a “saling pusa” (token candidate).
“We are the host. The host country cannot (win). I cannot serve lechon and bring it back to my kitchen kasi I’m giving it to you,” she added.
After the preliminary round, Diaz named Miss Canada as her favorite, although she advised her to lose some weight: “I love her face. Am I right? She’s beautiful.”
Others in her Top 5 include candidates from China, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, and Thailand.
Netizens had been in a tweeting frenzy after online voting for Miss Universe candidates opened on January 24.
Ethel Booba, Paolo Ballesteros, Derek Ramsay and Wynwyn Marquez were among celebs rallying behind Medina, amid bashing over her communication skills.
Medina received another slew of criticisms when she said that the “terno” was invented by former First Lady Imelda Marcos during the preliminary competition on January 26.
The model and part-time interior designer has apologized for the wrong choice of word.
“Sorry for that word… Mali lang ‘yung word na nagamit ko,” Medina told ABS-CBN.
(Sorry for that word. I chose the wrong word.)
“She’s the icon in the 60s and 70s so she popularized it those butterfly sleeves.Wag niyo naman sana seryosohin. I did really research it. I read a lot about it,” she added.
(She’s the icon in the 60s and 70s so she popularized it, those butterfly sleeves. Don’t take it seriously.)
Reigning queen Pia Wurtzbach immediately came to Medina’s rescue.
“Hindi naman niya sasadyain ‘yun kung alam niya. Sa tingin ko she just honestly did not know. Let’s just uplift her instead of putting her down,” said Wurtzbach.
(I don’t think she would say that intentionally if she knew it. I think she just honestly did not know.)
