The three judges, who awarded a unanimous decision in favor of Australian Jeff Horn, must be fired from boxing, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto said on Monday, July 3.
“Those judges must be fired from boxing. Clearly, Manny won. All those who watched the fight know Sen. Manny was robbed of victory, ” Recto said in a text message, referring to Senator Manny Pacuiao, who lost his WBO welterweight title to Horn Sunday, July 2.
Asked if Pacquiao should now retire from boxing after his latest loss, Recto said the decision would be up to the neophyte senator.
“That’s his call. He knows what’s best for him, his family, the sport and his fans,” he added.
Even Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, an opposition member, believed that the judges “stole” victory from Pacquiao.
“As far as boxing is concerned, I remain a big fan of Manny Pacquiao and I agree with the general observation that the judges stole that victory from him,” Trillanes said in a separate text message Sunday night.
“As regards the future, for as long as he believes that he can still fight, laban lang and continue to make us proud,” the senator added.
For Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, Pacquiao had nothing more to prove as he considered him “one of the best boxers ever,” and a “living legend of the sport.”
“At bilang kaibigan siyempre nag aalala ka na rin lalo na’t magkasama pa kami ngayon. Boxing is a dangerous sport. Tuwing may laban si Manny, pakiramdam ko di ako makahinga hagga’t matapos ang laban. Iba na kasi pag kaibigan mo yung lumalaban,” Ejercito said.
