Lady Spiker Mika Aereen “Mika” Reyes has reminded fellow graduating students of De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila to be thankful for the blessings that they were receiving even when they come “with a price”.
“Be thankful with what you receive. Everything you have is a blessing yun nga lang it comes with a price,” said Reyes, an AB Psychology graduate, in a speech delivered to her batch mates at the College of Liberal Arts’ Recognition Rites this Wednesday, June 15.
In a short clip posted at the Instagram account of “The La Sallian”, Reyes shared lessons she learned as member of the university’s Lady Spikers, which bagged the 2015 UAAP championship in women’s volleyball.
The college recognition rites for the 176th batch of graduates are currently being held at different venues in campus. College of Liberal Arts graduates are currently gathered at the 4th Floor Henry Sy Sr. Hall. Graduating Lady Spiker Mika Reyes was chosen as the speaker for the CLA Recognition Rites.
As an athlete, Reyes said her campus life was “under watch and scrutiny” most of the time which has toughened her up.
“Pag maganda ang laro mo they’d say you could have done better. Pag panget kasalanan mo bakit natalo,” Reyes said.
(If you played well, they’d say you could have done better. If your game was terrible, you take the blame for the loss.)
“They’re gonna throw stones at you regardless of whether or not you performed well.”
Reyes said, however, that focusing on the good things helped her through.
“Okay lang, you’re going to say, ‘I am playing for the school, I am playing for the people who believe in me, I am playing for the family who loves me’”, said Reyes.
(It’s okay. You’re going to say, ‘I am playing for the school. I am playing for the people who believe in me. I am playing for the family who loves me.’”)
A middle hitter for La Salle, Reyes was awarded Most Valuable Player by the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) in 2015.
Reyes will be playing for the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers at the Philippine SuperLiga All Filipino Conference 2016, which opens at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan on June 18.
Reyes was romantically linked to Ateneo Blue Eagle Kiefer “the phenom” Ravena who is now in a relationship with another Atenean and a “phenom” herself in volleyball – Alyssa Valdez.
