“No way.”

This was what Environment Secretary Regina “Gina” Lopez said on Thursday, January 12, about a plan by Nickelodeon, a US-based children’s TV network, to build an underwater resort and theme park in Palawan.

“If the underwater theme park would cause the destruction of corals, right away, I will say no way,” Lopez said in a statement posted on Twitter.

“I will never allow our biodiversity to be killed for money that some people want to make,” said Lopez.

On Wednesday, January 11, a petition started circulating online asking Nickelodeon (Viacom International Media Networks), which will sponsor the construction, to stop the plan to build a 400-hectare underwater theme park in Coron.

Lopez pointed out that Palawan has rich biodiversity and lots of ecotourism potentials that should primarily be tapped by the Filipino people for the Filipino people.

She also said that the marine resources of Palawan should benefit the greater majority.
