The San Sebastian Stags pulled off one of its biggest victories of their campaign when they defeated the league-leading Letran Knights, 89-87, in round two of the NCAA Season 91 Men’s Basketball at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan CityTuesday evening, August 25.
After trailing for most of the way, the Stags were finally able to tie the game at 79 when Bradwyn Guinto managed to score from point blank range. It was back and forth from there as both teams traded leads in the crucial stages of the payoff period.
Down by a point, Ryan Costelo drove down hard inside the paint and converted a tough layup to give the Stags an 88-87 advantage with 9.4 ticks left to play. Letran had one last shot for the win but any hope of that was quickly dashed when Mark Cruz lost possession of the ball while driving in the left wing. Michael Calisaan, who was playing superbly on both ends of the floor, came up with the big stop in the dying seconds to seal the win for San Sebastian.
Calisaan was named as the best player of the ball game with 27 points and 10 rebounds as the Stags improved to a 3-7 win-loss slate.
Earlier on Tuesday, the San Beda Red Lions pounced on the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 96-84, for the Mendiola-based school’s eighth win in 10 outings.
The five-time defending champions were buoyed by an impressive performance from Art dela Cruz, who had a college career high 30 points while hauling down 10 rebounds. Dela Cruz, selected as the ninth overall pick of Blackwater Elite in the recently concluded 2015 PBA Draft, added five assists and four steals to his stat line.
AC Soberano also provided ample firepower for the Red Lions, as he was lights out from the field, chipping in 20 huge markers.
San Beda was playing without big man Ola Adeogun, who was serving a one game suspension due to a dugout incident during the halftime break of their previous game against Arellano University.
