One of two suspects linked to a rape-robbery incident aboard an unregistered or “colorum” UV Express van was arrested but fatally shot while allegedly grappling with a police escort for a firearm early Friday, June 17, an official said.
Quoted on radio, Chief Inspector Rodel Marcelo of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), said the suspect, identified as Alfie Turado, was in critical condition when he was brought to the hospital, but succumbed to his wounds.
Before he died, however, Turado denied the allegations against him, said Marcelo.
Turado was subdued in a “citizens’ arrest” and beaten up, police said.
Turado was identified on CCTV as one of the suspects in the rape and robbery of a female passenger this week, along with one Wilfredo Lorenzo, who was arrested previously.
Police said Turado and Lorenzo confronted each other at the police station and accused each other of committing the crime.
Senior Superintendent Joselito Esquivel, QCPD deputy district director for operation, said Turado died from gunshot wounds to the chest and another to the neck.
Esquivel said investigation showed Turado and Lorenzo took turns raping the victim.
