This is the question two opposition lawmakers are seeking answers to as President Rodrigo Duterte continues to be absent from his official functions, saying the people deserve to know about his real condition.

“The absence of the President from the public is very unusual especially there is still an ongoing crisis in Marawi, much more to be absent for a week without explanation except to rest,” Partylist Representative Gary Alejano of Magdalo said on Thursday, June 15.

“People cannot help but speculate about the status of the President’s health,” he said.

Alejano and Rep. Teddy Baguilat of Ifugao said Malacañang should be forthright in telling the nation about his health, stressing it is “of national concern.”

“The President’s health is a national concern. Transparency is a must,” Baguilat said.

According to Baguilat, the most plausible explanation for a president going on leave for a week or more is health reasons.

“It’s most likely that he had to undergo a medical check-up. The results have to be disclosed to the public because ever since Cory’s time (Aquino), a president’s health has been a national concern,” he said.

(Cory is the late President Corazon Aquino.)

Duterte failed to show up at the Independence Day rites in Manila on Monday, June 12, designating instead Vice President Leni Robredo to represent him.  After this, Palace Spokesperson Ernesto Abella announced that the President would not have any official schedule for the week.
