Duterte hails Filipino workers on Labor Day

President Rodrigo Duterte on Labor Day hailed Filipino workers in the country and abroad as he assured the government would create thousands of jobs in the Philippines.

“Workers play a significant role in pushing for the rights to humane conditions at work, basic wages and organized acts including collective bargaining and unionism. The government recognize these basic rights of workers in all industries, and we are committed to protect and defend these rights,” Duterte said in his Labor Day message.

The President cited the role of workers in ensuring “humane conditions” in the workplace.

“Workers play a significant role in pushing for the rights to humane conditions at work, basic wages and organized acts including collective bargaining and unionism,” he said. “The government recognize these basic rights of workers in all industries, and we are committed to protect and defend these rights.”

The chief executive assured the labor department would continue to create jobs for Filipinos.

“The Department of Labor and Employment takes the lead in ensuring that thousands of job will be created locally, in coordination with all other agencies, as we tap the skills, experience and expertise of our own people,” he said

“Everyone who contributes labor as part of his commitment to nation-building deserved nothing less than a share of the fruits of his hard work,” he added.

Duterte will spend his first Labor Day as President in his hometown City of Davao. He is expected to meet with labor groups at the People’s Park at 4:30 p.m.
