Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach took to Instagram to rally behind a campaign which promotes HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) testing.

On June 27 she posted a video on the Miss Universe IG account with text: “Today is National HIV Testing Day. Today is a reminder to get tested and take care of not only your health, but your love ones’ health too. ❤️ Visit aids.gov to learn more. Take that first step. Take Control. Get Tested.”

On the video Wurtbach revealed that “1 in 8 people who have HIV don’t even know it yet, which means some individuals are not receiving the attention and care that they need and deserve to stay healthy and avoid risking others.”

According to the World Health Organization website, there are at least 37 million living with HIV but only 54 percent are aware of their infection.

Only about 17 million people were receiving antiretroviral therapy in developing countries at the end of 2015, based on WHO data.

On June 10 the United Nations General Assembly has adopted, by consensus, the “2016 Political Declaration on the Fast-Track to End AIDS in the age of Sustainable Development,” which aimed to end the AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) epidemic as a public health threat by 2030,

In the Philippines, the Department of Health has raised the alarm over increased number of HIV incidences.

A total of 751 HIV cases were recorded in February this year, 16 percent higher versus cases recorded in the same month in 2015.

The DOH said 95 percent of the HIV cases in February were acquired through sexual transmission.

Metro Manila posted the highest number of incidences followed by Calabarzon and Central Visayas.

Since 1984 DOH has recorded 31,911 HIV cases and 2,762 AIDS cases, with 1,649 deaths. MC
