Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa claims that he is a relative of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.
“Kung magresearch ka makita niyo sa kanilang family tree, sa mother side isa sa mga lola niya Ines dela Rosa. Iyon ang kina-capitalize ko kaya kineclaim ko na descendant ako ni Jose Rizal,” Dela Rosa said in an interview on Monday, June 19.
Mayor Timmy Chipeco even invited Dela Rosa as guest of honor during the 156th birth anniversary of the hero at the Rizal Shrine in Calamba, Laguna.
Asked how he found out about his relationship with Rizal, Dela Rosa said it was when he saw Rizal’s family tree during a high school field trip in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.
“Nakita ko sa bahay ni Rizal, sa records doon na merong family tree doon na may Ines dela Rosa,” he said.
(I saw the house of Rizal and based on records, there is a family tree.)
The police chief, a native of Davao, said he could proudly say that he inherited from Rizal his love of country.
And like Rizal, dela Rosa said he was also willing to die for his countrymen.
“Mahal na mahal ko ang bayang Pilipinas na I’m willing to die for this country. Iyon ang namanana ko sa aking ninuno,” he said.
(I love the Philippines so much that I’m willing to die for this country. That is what I inherited from my ancestors.)
