Congratulations to the newly crowned Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere of France who ended her country’s 63-year drought for the prestigious title. The first and only time France won the contest was in 1953.

It wasn’t a surprise at all, however, when Mittenaere won the crown. From the start, the French beauty has been on the list of favorite candidates to win the prestigious beauty pageant that was staged in Manila for the third time since its inception in 1952.

This aspiring dentist easily captured the hearts of many Filipinos with her charm, wit and classic beauty – the very same traits that made our very own Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach impressive in her reign as Miss Universe 2015 when she ended the Philippines own drought for the crown that the country last won in 1973 with Margie Moran.

With her confidence, grace and other admirable qualities, Wurtzbach upped the standards of Miss Universe.

The German-Filipina simply showed them how the sash could be a powerful tool in helping people around the world, or the universe rather.

But the real winners in this event are the Filipinos who, from the get-go, were determined to put up a world class show.

The hard work seemed to have paid off after no less than Paula Shugart, head of the Miss Universe Organization, said the pageant in Manila was “the best show I have done”.

Even pageant host Steve Harvey, once the “most hated man” in the country after he wrongfully announced Miss Colombia as the winner of Miss Universe 2015 instead of Miss Philippines, was impressed.

From security arrangements to the accommodation of our 86 beauties, the Philippines was indeed ready to host the pageant with the help of the private sector, led by the LCS Group of Companies under former Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson.

Tourism Secretary Wanda Corazon Teo said she would love to have the Miss Universe beauty contest staged here once again.

Teo said that give the Philippines two more years and it would be ready to host the beauty pageant for the fourth time.

After the three-hour worldwide telecast of the Miss Universe pageant from Manila, let’s hope that other countries would come to know that  there was more to the Philippines than reports of kidnappings and extrajudicial killings.

There’s a lot of fun too and we’re just waiting to welcome everyone with open arms.
