President-elect Rodrigo Duterte told mining firms Saturday night, June 4, to shape up their operations and stop destroying the environment, especially in Mindanao.
In his victory party at the Crocodile Park in Davao City, Duterte said he has “a big problem with mining companies” because “they are destroying the soil of our country.”
“Mining people must shape up. Karamihan na ginagawa ninyo ngayon especially Surigao, butas-butas na. You have to stop,” he said.
He said these operations are “spoiling the land, destroying Mindanao.”
Duterte also said he is eyeing a cooperative-style mining system with Filipino companies, especially those from Mindanao, getting priority.
“We will support them and give instructions how not to end up spoiling the land natin dito,” he said.
