What police consider a simple shooting incident by a gambling addict at the Resorts World Manila that claimed the lives of 38 people, including his own, isn’t the case for  Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

After grilling National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Oscar Albayalde at the House of Representatives on Wednesday, June 7, about the possibility that what happened at the hotel-casino in Pasay City was a terror attack, Alvarez now would want to know why Jessie Carlos ended his life in Room 510 at the adjacent Maxim’s Hotel.

“Bakit niya hinanap iyong room 510?  Ano ang meron doon, kasi makita mo, hinanap niya talaga.  Sino ba ang nakatira roon?  Bakit tumitingin siya doon sa room 510, nakita niya, iyon ang pilit niyang binuksan,” Alvarez said in an interview Thursday, June 8.

(Why was he looking for Room 510? What was there? You can see that he was looking for it. Who lived there? Why was he looking at Room 510? When he saw it, he forcibly opened it.)

Alvarez was referring to a CCTV video of the gunman as he tried to flee the casino area of Resorts World, which he attacked by firing indiscriminately and burning card tables, consequently trapping 37 patrons and employees who died of suffocation from the heavy smoke that filled the room.

He said he would ask hotel officials about the identity of the person who was occupying Room 510.

“Marami pang katanungan na dapat nating itanong maliban doon sa mga security procedure ng Resorts World na dapat sagutin,” he said.

(There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered aside from the security procedures of Resorts World.)

Three House committees conducted the inquiry on Wednesday and made an inspection of the casino.

In the same inquiry, Albayalde was firm that what happened at Resorts World was not terrorism because it did not subscribe to the modus operandi by terrorists of “sowing fear” and “inflicting massive loss of lives”.

The hearing will resume on June 14 when officials of the casino-hotel will be called anew.
