Boxing champ Manny Pacquiao is not qualified to run for vice president in 2016 because he does not meet the minimum age requirement, an election lawyer said on Tuesday, October 7.

Recently, Vice President Jejomar Binay visited Saranggani, Pacquiao’s legislative district. The visit fueled talks that Binay was eyeing Pacquiao as his running mate in the 2016. Presidential election.

“For sure Binay knows that to be qualified to run for the position of president and vice president, the candidate must at least be 40 years of age on the day of the election as provided under Section 2, Article VII of the 1987 Constitution,” election lawyer Romulo Macalintal pointed out.

He noted that Pacquiao was born on Dec. 17, 1978, which means he will only be 38 years old by 2016.

“He is, however, qualified to run for senator where the age qualification is at least 35 years of age on the day of the election, as provided under Section 3, Article VI of the Constitution,” Macalintal explained.
