Senator Antonio Trillanes IV’s motion to investigate President Rodrigo Duterte’s alleged direct involvement in the extrajudicial killings as Davao City mayor had been referred to the committee on rules for further investigation.

Sen. Vicente Sotto III made the move after Trillanes filed a motion seeking to refer the matter to the blue ribbon committee.

“I move to amend Sen. Trillanes’ motion to be referred to committee on rules to further study it,” said Sotto.

“Now we have seen the different corroborating evidence on the testimony of Mr. Edgar Matobato we are faced with the very frightening prospect — that of having a mass murderer as President of the country,” said Trillanes during a privilege speech at the Senate on Monday, September 26.

Trillanes defended Matobato’s testimony, which Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, an ally of Duterte, said were inconsistent based on Matobato’s responses to Cayetano’s questions during the two Senate hearings on extrajudicial killings.

Trillanes said that aside from minor inconsistencies, Matobato was not lying.

He presented documents from the Davao City government such as identification cards, service cards, permits to carry firearms, among others, to prove that Matobato’s claim that he was member of the DDS was true.

Trillanes also cited several news reports, which confirmed Matobato’s statements that the DDS kidnapped Sali Makdum and killed three suspected female drug pushers.

He also cited a November 2014 report by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism stating that there were bones found in a private property owned by retired police officer Bienvenido Laud.

Matobato, in previous Senate hearings, claimed that the Laud property was where the DDS disposed of the bodies.

He also said that contrary to the statements of Representative Karlo Nograles of Davao, the DDS have killed four supporters of his father, former Speaker Prospero Nograles, based on news reports.

“We are able to look the other way because it was convenient for us to do so, all that has changed we cannot look away anymore because now Edgar Matobato is telling us in the face he has testified that President Duterte as mayor of Davao City was the mastermind behind the DDS,” said Trillanes.
